Thermal Conductiivity - Melts

Method employed

  • thw The transient hot-wire technique (THW) has been applied very successfully to the measurement of the thermal conductivity of melts. The sensor is composed of two platinum wires, coverred by a thick layer of alumina on both sides (0.3 mm thick). The sensor is lowered in the melt. Solving the full theoretical equations for this exact geometry enables the absolute determination of the thermal conductivity with a very low uncertainty.

At low times the heat wave sees only the alumina. Thus the properties of the alumina are obtained by FEM. Consequently at longer times, FEM modelling produces the thermal conductivity of the melt.

 Ranges & uncertainties

  • The final instrument for the measurement of the thermal conductivity of molten metals was built in Imperial College, London (Professor W.A. Wakeham's Laboratory).

The instrument operated up to 1000 'C with an absolute uncertainty of 0.5 - 2%.
